Summary
This miniature whip was designed and made by Doug Kite as a hat band. It is made from kangaroo hide, with tan and brown stripe and diamond pattern near handle, which is fully plaited with a Scobie knob. Red cotton is used as the cracker. This is Doug's signature piece, it is unique design and is a significant and beautiful example of his skills as a braider. He has made approximately 200 of these hat bands and has sold them across Australia, and has had a number of orders from the USA.
Part of the Doug Kite Leather Braiding Collection which consists of handmade leather braided products, hand tools and works in progress made by Doug Kite from 1984 to 2016. The Collection also includes oral histories, video and photographs. The Collection was featured on the ABC Landline program on 7 August 2016.
Physical Description
Two tone kangaroo skin leather braided whip with hard handle, flexible thong and pink fabric popper. The whip is looped and tied together at the handle with the leather fall.
