Summary
This small picture frame was made by Doug Kite for display at his stall at the Berwick Market as a way to attract visitor's interest. Originally he had displayed the frame without a photograph, but no one took any notice. Doug reflected that 'People don't really know anything about plaiting...they wouldn't take any notice'. After inserting a newspaper image of the notorious failed businessman, Christopher Skase, this item attracted significant attention and comment by market visitors. The frame was made with kangaroo hide, using a 'under one, over one' method. The corners were a significant new challenge, and typically something that inspired Doug into developing new and innovative braiding methods.
Part of the Doug Kite Leather Braiding Collection which consists of handmade leather braided products, hand tools and works in progress made by Doug Kite from 1984 to 2016. The Collection also includes oral histories, video and photographs. The Collection was featured on the ABC Landline program on 7 August 2016.
