Summary
This unfinished hat band was made by Doug Kite with 17 strands of kangaroo hide. It is made of natural and white leather with double ridges, using a 'under one, over one' method. Doug noticed these hat bands at the Marree races and wondered how they were made. If the hat band is 25 inch diameter the leather needs to be three times this length for braiding.
Part of the Doug Kite Leather Braiding Collection which consists of handmade leather braided products, hand tools and works in progress made by Doug Kite from 1984 to 2016. The Collection also includes oral histories, video and photographs. The Collection was featured on the ABC Landline program on 7 August 2016.
