The Royal Australian Air Force was formed on 13 August 1921. The design for the RAAF badge was commissioned in 1937 from John Heaton-Armstrong, Chester Herald (an officer of arms, College of Arms, London) and was accepted in 1939.
Stokes and Sons started when Thomas Stokes produced buttons and tokens in the late 1850s. The company started mass producing medals in the early 20th century. Over the years Stokes and Sons have minted many of the special occasion medals.
Physical Description
Round die with raised design featuring a circle within which is inscribed 'Royal Australian Air Force'; the Imperial Crown; a wedge-tailed eagle in flight; and a scroll beneath inscribed with the Latin motto 'Per Ardua Ad Astra', taken to mean 'Through Struggle to the Stars'.
