Paisley shawl made circa 1850s, owned by Charlotte (Lizzie) Twycross. It may have been used by her when visiting the Melbourne International Exhibition at the (Royal) Exhibition Building, 1880-81.
Physical Description
Finely woven twill tapestry technique wool shawl in 'Paisley' design. Colour palette red, orange, black, white and blue. Fringed edging.
Significance
This shawl provides additional context to the John Twycross International Exhibitions Collection by further documenting the life of one of it's curators, Charlotte Twycross. It also offers a glimpse into women's fashions in Melbourne in the second half of the 19th Century.
