Summary

The Whittlesea Community Garden and Bushfire Memorial is one of fifty-six digital photographs commemorating the fifth anniversary of the bushfires of 2009 in Victoria.

The Fire Recovery Unit in Regional Development Victoria (RDV), planned and organised a Fifth Anniversary Remembrance Event for the 2009 Victorian bushfires. The event was held on Sunday 9 February 2014 at the Melbourne Museum. In the advertising and execution of the event, a wide range of printed and digital materials were produced. The most significant of these was a photography project titled 'Images of Recovery', which aimed to give expression to the experiences of individuals and communities in their recovery. 'Images of Recovery' came out of the commissioning of a professional photographer, Silvi Glattaeur, to capture aspects of recovery in communities and landscapes, five years after the 2009 bushfires. This included the production of 22 printed photographs for display at the event and a larger digital collection of 87 images provided to the Fire Recovery Unit in high quality web and print ready versions, of which a total of 56 images were acquired by Museums Victoria to form part of the Victorian Bushfires Collection.
