Summary

Colour photograph of Colorama titled 'Apollo 11 Triptych', numbered '023' in the Colorama collection binder. It was produced in October 1980 and features images dating from the NASA Apollo 11 Moon Mission in July 1969.

The NASA Apollo 11 spacecraft left earth from Cape Kennedy, Florida in the United States of America on 16 July 1969 and landed on the moon a few days later on 20 July where Commander Neil Armstrong and Lunar Module pilot Edwin 'Buzz' Aldrin walked on the surface of the moon, the first humans to do so. Command Module pilot Michael Collins maintained lunar orbit while his crewmates visited the moon surface. The crew landed back on earth on 24 July 1969.

The three images in this triptych were taken by Neil Armstrong and feature Buzz Aldrin climbing down from the Lunar Module (the Eagle) to the moon surface (left); Buzz Aldrin standing on the moon (middle); and Buzz Aldrin standing in front of the American flag that had just been placed on the moon surface (right).

Kodak 'Colorama' transparencies were famously exhibited at Grand Central Station, New York, from the 1950s to 1990s. The originals were 18 x 60 feet, but smaller versions could also be backlit and would have been distributed by Kodak Australasia Pty Ltd as visual merchandising to Kodak retailers in Australia. This folder of Coloramas showed the range of Colorama images available to use.

This object belongs to the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005, when the Melbourne manufacturing plant at Coburg closed down.
