Summary
Packet of Austral Star photographic paper, manufactured by Baker & Rouse at the Austral Works factory in Abbotsford between 1897-1911.
Contains 12 white sheets sized 4 & 1/4 x 3 & 1/4 enclosed in heavy brown paper, and an instruction leaflet that is branded Baker & Rouse Pty Ltd.
In 1908 Baker & Rouse Pty Ltd merged with Eastman Kodak to become what was later known as Kodak Australasia. The company continued to release Baker & Rouse and Austral branded products for a number of years after this.
This object complements the Kodak collection of products, promotional materials, photographs and working life artefacts collected from Kodak Australasia in 2005, when the Melbourne manufacturing plant at Coburg closed down.
Physical Description
Small brown envelope containing 12 sheets of photographic paper contained within another dark brown envelope and sandwiched between 2 pieces of card. There is also a folded instruction sheet.
Significance
This product is one of the earliest products in the Kodak Heritage Collection and is quite rare.

Baker & Rouse became a proprietary company in 1897 hence that is the earliest date this product could have been branded Baker & Rouse Pty Ltd. Although the company merged to become Kodak Australasia in 1908, Baker & Rouse products were still sold for a few years after this especially before the company became Kodak Australasia Limited in 1911 and Baker & Rouse stopped operating. -
