Summary
Haus of Dizzy,`Made in Naarm' necklace. Part of a suite of jewellery commissioned by Museums Victoria from local designer Kristy Dickinson under her `Haus of Dizzy' label, for the Fashion Redux exhibition held at Melbourne Museum during March 2019. Held in conjunction with the Melbourne Fashion Festival, it enabled 9 Melbourne fashion identities to select garments and accessories from the Museum's collection and reinterpret them for a contemporary audience.
Dickinson selected a dress from the recently acquired Jenny Bannister archive. According to her "I chose a beautiful piece from the inspiring Jenny Bannister called 'Australiana Net' from the 1980's. It's an amazing netted dress with beautiful leather patchwork on it and it definitely reminds me of growing up in the 80's. This will be a beautiful pairing with my Indigenous range and really show the love I have for this country with a heartfelt nod to my Indigenous culture."
This necklace is particularly interesting as it is inspired by the `Made in Australia' necklace that is held by the Museum as part of the Jenny Bannister collection, and was commissioned by her in 2008 from Fitzroy jeweller William Llewellyn Griffiths to protest at the loss of clothing manufacturing in Australia.
Haus of Dizzy specialises in bright, oversized statement jewellery pieces incorporating elements of female empowerment and pride in Indigenous heritage. Through their pieces, HOD shines a light on political, queer, Indigenous, environmental and feminist issues.
