Summary
Photograph taken at the Eastbridge Language Centre, Blackburn, around 1980. The Centre was videoed by students of the Institute of Early Childhood Development in 1981 (HT 48434).
In 1978 the first language reception centres were established for refugee students living in Commonwealth Government hostels: Eastbridge Hostel (Nunawading), Wiltona Hostel (Williamstown) and Midway Hostel (Maribyrnong). Classes for Eastbridge Hostel students were hosted by Blackburn Primary School until May 1979, when they moved to the vacant St Joseph's Catholic School in Surrey Hills. Students were taken from Eastbridge Hostel to the schol by bus. By early 1980 Eastbridge Language Centre had satellite classes running at Parkmore and Mitcham Primary Schools, as well as others in the Nunawading area. In early 1980 another language centre was established in Noble Park for students at the Enterprise Hostel at Springvale. When Eastbridge Hostel was closed in mid-1980, enrolments dropped sharply. The language centre at St Joseph's Convent moved to Blackburn South Primary School in 1980, where it remained for 11 years. This opening in 1980 is likely the reason the photograph was taken.
