Photograph from an album compiled by Sister Selina Lily (Lil) Mackenzie, documenting life as an Australian nurse during World War I. Lil nursed at the 1st Australian General Hospital (AGH) from October 1915 to January 1917. The 1st AGH was located in the Heliopolis Palace Hotel on the north-eastern edge of Cairo.

Description of Content

Six workmen digging a hole. Four wear hats and two wear headscarves; several have braces holding up their trousers. A plank of wood crosses a large hole, on which several of the men stand. One is shovelling soil; another holds a kerosene tip ready. Multi-storied stone or brick buildings line the background, some with arched verandahs.
