Summary
This Customer Notice was issued by Woolworths supermarkets in March 2020 to inform customers of the changes to the store's raincheck and refund policies.
This notice was issued in response to the unprecedented increased sales of certain items in the store, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Customer demand had increased to the point that many of products had become scarce and had even disappeared from the shelves. The new policy on rainchecks and refunds was designed to encourage shoppers to purchase only what they really needed and to not stockpile.
Panic buying happened all around the world in 2020. From Australia to Asia, and Europe to the USA, consumers stockpiled products in response to the fear and uncertainty about the impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic would bring. In Melbourne stockpiling began during February and lasted until late April. The panic buying blitz led to widespread stock shortages, leaving many consumers without household staples for several months and manufacturers working around the clock to keep up with demand.
