Summary

Newspaper notice from The Age newspaper on 18 March 2020. It was released by the four major supermarkets Aldi, Coles, IGA & Woolworths to announce how they are working collectively to ensure that supplies of products remained in stock during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This notice references the panic buying that was happening around the world, and which began in Melbourne during February and lasted through March until late April 2020. One of the earliest and most potent symbols of public response to the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic was seeing supermarket shelves stripped bare.

From Australia to Asia, and Europe to the USA, consumers stockpiled products in response to the fear and uncertainty about the impacts that the COVID-19 pandemic would bring. The panic buying blitz led to widespread stock shortages, leaving many consumers without household staples for several months in early 2020 and manufacturers working around the clock to keep up with demand.
