Folder for housing black and white photograph of the grave of Corporal John Peile in a grey paper photo wallet. Wallet has been removed for display purposes.

Corporal John Peile, service number 2662, was the son of John and Mary Agnes Peile. He was born in Echuca, Victoria and was an unmarried miner when he enlisted on 25 June 1915, at the age of 38. He served in the 2nd Battalion, AIF, in Gallipoli and France. He died in France on 18 September 1918 and is buried at Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, France (III. H. 9).

John's war record, held by the National Archives of Australia, includes a request from the Base Records Office in Melbourne to his mother, Mary Peile, requesting confirmation for which religious symbol (a cross or Star of David) should be incised on his headstone. Mary Peile's answer is included with the service records of John's younger brother, Albert, where she requests a cross to be incised on the headstones of both her sons.

According to John's war record he was originally interred in the Hesbecourt Communal Cemetery Extension in October 1919 before he was moved to the Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension in January 1920. His record also states that his mother received a photograph of his grave in February 1920, this image is therefore likely to have been his final resting place in the Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension, but before his final gravestone was crafted.
