Wine, believed to be from Shiraz grapes, bottled by Antonio Gobbo, father of Sir James Gobbo, circa 1959 at the Gobbo family premises in Drummond Street, Carlton. Antonio Gobbo purchased wine in bulk from Mr Portelli who produced it at his property in South Australia. In the 1950s Mr Portelli would deliver wine to Italians in Carlton in 30 gallon barrels at 6 shillings a gallon. Antonio bought wine from Portelli for a few years and bottled the wine in Victoria Bitter beer bottles and sealed it with metal crown tops. The Gobbo family also produced tomato puree, which they home bottled in the same Victoria Bitter bottles as the wine.
