Summary
Alternative Name(s): Ballgown
Dress purchased by Georgia Dereani in 1959 for a staff ball in Block 19 at Bonegilla Migrant Camp. Georgia Dereani, her husband and infant son immigrated to Australia from Trieste, Italy, in 1955. They spent the first five years of their lives in Victoria at Bonegilla Migrant Camp. Georgina and her husband became staff members at Bonegilla and were allocated private accommodation, which Georgina went to great lengths to make comfortable, purchasing many household items around Albury, NSW. Georgia loves shopping and clothes, when she tried this dress on for the first time, she danced around the room. It was a 'model' dress - one of a kind, and was purchased with a purse and gloves to match.
Physical Description
Dress with fitted brown bodice with shoestring straps. There is gold beaded detailing along the top of the bodice and on the straps. The dress has a full skirt which falls to mid calf. The skirt is composed of four layers of dark brown tulle over a light brown lining. The lining and first layer of tulle are mid-calf length, then each subsequent layer of tulle is shorter. Over the tulle is a layer of dark brown sheer chiffon which is knee length at the front of the skirt, then shortens around the back exposing the layers of tulle underneath. The chiffon has embroidered and beaded dark brown flowers along the bottom.
