Although the Australian Labor Party attacked the Coalition's proposed privatisation of the Commonwealth Bank during the 1990 election campaign, upon winning the election they began the first steps towards privatisation of the Commonwealth Bank introducing The Commonwealth Banks Restructuring Act in December 1990. The State Bank of Victoria was sold by the Victorian Government to the Commonwealth Banking Corporation in 1990-1991. The Commonwealth Bank was then privatised in three stages with sales of shares in 1991, 1993 and 1996.
