Summary

Digital photograph of Mrs Lucia Di Carlo, taken by her daughter Kangi Donaldson. The photograph was taken at Lucia's home in Clayton in 2020.

Lucia grew up in southern Italy. All the women in her family made crafts to sell, supplementing their family's income. She learnt her skills from the older women in her family, and was soon adept at spinning cotton, knitting socks, making macramé curtains and skilfully embroidering items such as pillow slips. She learned to crochet years later, after migrating to Australia in the 1950s. She still enjoys crocheting for her extended family, including blankets, beanies and pot holders.
