Summary
Ceramic Frozen Charlotte doll, circa 1850-1914.
One of an assortment of dolls collected from the St Kilda tip and the Dudly Flats tip in Footscray by Mrs Diane Cummings.
Frozen Charlottes were made in moulds in Germany, France, England and Japan and sold by the thousands. They were an inexpensive doll accessible to a wide range of families. Frozen Charlottes were typically unjointed china dolls that ranged in height from 25 mm to 100 mm, popular during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Originating in the USA, the 25 mm (or 1") dolls were also commonly known as 'penny dolls', as they sold for 1¢ in America. Usually undressed. Paint was added to highlight hair, ribbons and other features. Some dolls were made with movable arms attached by string.
Physical Description
Small white porcelain doll moulded in one piece. Facial features are painted on black paint.
