Summary

Cotton string singlet used by Australian geologist Ian Macleod on expedition to Antarctica in 1958. McLeod was one of ANARE's most experienced geologists, for expeditions to the Antarctic during the late 1950s and in the 1960s. This singlet is part of Museum Victoria's collection of artefacts from the post-war era of scientific exploration of Antarctica.

Cotton string underclothes are an interesting example of Antarctic clothing. They create pockets of air underneath the expeditioner's clothes which produce a surprisingly effective insulating layer. At the same time the cotton string acts to wick away any sweat without covering the expeditioner's skin with damp cloth.
