Summary

Letter on Commonwealth of Australia Minister for Immigration letterhead, from Annabelle Rankin, Acting Minister for Immigration to J.A. Pettit MP, Member for Hume, Canberra, dated 4 July, 1968, regarding a letter received on 24 May 1968 (HT 57024). It notes Pettit's representation on behalf of Richard Winnett in matter of Hans Hukom and the regrettable delay in making an application form available. The correct form is attached and Mr Winnett is advised it should be completed and return to the Immigration Department secretary for consideration.

This is one of a collection of 40 documents and four photographs relating to the unsuccessful attempts by Hans Hukom, an Indonesian citizen, to migrate to Australia between 1968 and 1972.

Significance

Statement of Historical Significance:
Hans Hukom's documents provide an insight, at times frustrating and poignant, into one person's attempts to seek approval to immigrate, the vagaries of bureaucracy, and the likely influence of the White Australia policy in his ultimate lack of success, still officially in force at that time.
