Summary
Chantilly lace lappet, cream colour, probably 19th century. Hand-made, but not a standard lace: the thread used is the type usually used for machine lace (coarser and stronger than hand-made lace thread). By design (rather than technique) it is continental - probably from Ghent (in the Flemish region of Belgium). The mesh was put in afterwards - non-continuous lace.
The lappet was used in Broadmeadows, Melbourne. Part of a collection of 19th century and early 20th century textiles, at least some of which were brought to Australia from Sussex, England.
Physical Description
Chantilly lace, cream. Pattern of daisy-like flowers and leaves, with Tudor rose edging. Netting infill.
