Summary

Pair of pink table mats with an embroidered wheatsheaf design, part of the dowry of Irene Soumilas. Irene migrated to Australia from the Greek Island of Lefkas in 1958 to be married in 1959. Her dowry travelled in two trunks by ship, although she travelled by air. Many of her dowry items were made by local craftswomen, although other items were given to her by family and friends still living in Greece.

Physical Description

Two small square table mats,each with an embroidered wheatsheaf design in gold thread on a pale pink linen ground. The wheatsheaf motif has a central drawn threadwork lace panel and pulled threadwork is utilised in the florets and table mat border.
