Summary
Leaflet issued by the British Government Emigration Office, November 1851. This leaflet lists the conditions under which passage to Australia is granted, it was issued to Robert Panton in November 1851. Robert was the son of a Scottish shepherd, and worked as an agricultural labourer in Berwickshire. He married Christina Douglas in 1839, and in 1851-1852 the family made arrangements to emigrate to Port Phillip through the British Colonial Land and Emigration Office. The family was struck by tragedy shortly after arriving, Christina and two of their children, David and John, died within three months of their arrival.
Physical Description
Large paper document, cream coloured with discolourations. Printed and handwritten text on front and handwritten text on back. Item shows marking of having been folded, sealed and posted. Document contains information for Emigrants including Qualifications of Emigrants; Application and Approval; Payment Towards Passages; Cautions to Applicants and Outfits. Document has been cut in half and glued to a folio page with other documents on the back of the page.
