Summary
Apothecary jar containing sodium acetate, circa 1848 - 1950. Used in the pharmacy of a Victorian psychiatric hospital, prior to 1950. Sodium acetate, in solution, was apparently administered by mouth to render urine less acidic and to act as a mild diuretic.
Physical Description
Small, clear glass apothecary's jar with round base, straight sides, hemispherical shoulder, thin, shortish neck opening very slightly outward. Has glass stopper with broad, flat circular, horizontal top, hollowed out underneath. Has typed paper label - Sodium Acetate Saturated Solution - on side. Jar is 3/4 full of product, part of which has solidifed at bottom of jar.
