Summary

This is a wooden gavel used for the meetings of the Order of the Sons of Temperance. It is dated 1876 and was designed by W. Farrar. The gavel has been hand carved and turned, and it is elaborately decorated with insignia.

Physical Description

The gavel is elaborately decorated with insignia that has been hand carved and turned. The central column and handle is of a dark wood, with a cross piece of blonde coloured wood; it has been highly polished. The gavel is surmounted by a small, carved, dark wood pyramid shape which has the aims of the organization carved into the sides, e.g. love, temperance, etc.
