Summary

Framed original print, with hand-written annotations, titled 'The Melbourne International Exhibition 1880/ Plan of Gardens'. The print is framed in a maple eye wooden frame with a green border.

The print depicts Joseph Reed's original 1879 layout for the Carlton Gardens in preparation for the 1880 Melbourne International Exhibition. Amendments to the Exhibition Buildings themselves, in the form of the British Machinery Annexe to the north of the Eastern Machinery Annexe, and the additional German Annexe on the northern side of the Western Machinery Annexe suggest a date in the first six months of 1880.

Both these buildings were not originally envisaged as part of the Exhibition Buildings, but a need for further display area prompted them to be constructed in the final months leading up to the Exhibition's opening at the beginning of October, 1880.
