Summary

Ink on Paper Painting, 'Landscape-Past and Present', made by Lou Xiang, circa 1997. Lou is a Chinese brush and ink artist who was born in Shanghai in 1955. He studied traditional brush and ink painting on rice paper, calligraphy and for a short time seal carving/making. Xiang felt constrained by the lack freedom in China and came to Australia in 1988. Xiang's work has changed radically from the traditional Chinese landscapes he learned in China, to the expressive abstract calligraphic characters he now experiments with.

Physical Description

Brush and ink on rice paper painting depicting a bushfire in the Australian landscape, drawing heavily on Chinese compositional themes and a calligraphic style of brushstroke. It has been painted in a very minimal style with a distant blackened landscape and underneath this white space except for a simply rendered face in the foreground gazing upward.
