Summary
Ship's Pass issued by the Orient Line in 1954. The pass allows the bearer to board the ship Otranto. It was used by Geoffrey Tirchett's brother to visit Geoffrey and his wife Hazel on the ship when it stoped at Fremantle. Geoffrey and Hazel Tirchett migrated to Australia as `10 Pound Tourists' departing England on 3 June 1954. Geoffrey already had three brothers in Australia, and upon arrival the couple lived with one of Geoffrey's brothers in Brunswick, until they bought their own home in Pascoe Vale. They fondly remember the journey, especially the food which seemed plentiful after rationing in England.
The term '10 Pound Pom' or '10 Pound Tourist' refers to British migrants who came to Australia following World War Two on an assisted passage scheme where each migrant paid 10 pounds a ticket. Migrants were required to remain in Australia for two years.
