Issue 89 of 'The Exhibition Visitor's Daily Programme', printed on 14 January 1881 by W.H. Williams and published by W.G. Mitchell.
The 8-page programme is in newspaper format. It includes a concert programme (featuring pieces by Chopin, Liszt and Charbonnet), a visitor's guide to places of interest in Melbourne, reviews of exhibits, a ground plan of the exhibition building, and public transport information.There is also extensive advertising throughout.
In a notice to advertisers, the publisher W.G. Mitchell explained: 'The "Exhibition Daily Programme" will be published every morning during the Exhibition and is circulated amongst the principal hotels, restaurants and boarding establishments, in Melbourne and suburbs; and at the Exhibition in thousands Daily. Programmes of all Organ Recitals, Concerts, Band Performances, &c., taking place in the Exhibition Building and grounds, besides several columns of new matter, or a most valuable and interesting character both to exhibitors and visitors, will appear daily. The large Guaranteed Gratis Circulation, and the method of its distribution, especially arranged with the view of reaching the great body of Visitors to the Exhibition, renders the "Programme" an exceptionally favourable medium for Advertisements ...'
The Melbourne International Exhibition ran from 1 October 1880 to 30 April 1881. The (Royal) Exhibition Building, designed by Joseph Reed and built by David Mitchell, was especially constructed for the occasion. Over 1.3 million people visited the exhibition at a time when Melbourne's population was only around 282,000.
