The illustration shows a group of well-dressed men and women on the roof top balcony of the Exhibition Building during the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. The balcony has a wooden floor and wooden balustrades, with some of the men leaning over to enjoy the view. Part of the great dome is shown to the left of the balcony and two finials are also shown.

A southerly view over the city and bay is depicted in the background with recognisable buildings including Government House and the College of Surgeons. The illustration is hand-coloured in pink, green, blue, yellow and orange. The reverse side of the page is text only, in four newspaper columns.

The illustration is lightly tinted in pink, green, blue, yellow and orange.
