Summary

Facsimile copy of The Age, no.1, vol.1, Tuesday, 17 October 1854, with handwritten 'John Pascoe Fawkner' written in black ink on the top of pp. 1, 8.

Column six on page 4 and columns one and two on page 5 provide a report of the 1854 Melbourne Exhibition being held in the new building in William Street, Melbourne, to demonstrate the resources of the new colony, and which opened on this date. The Inauguration Ceremony of the Exhibition is described in an editorial, and additional articles provide a history and scope of the Exhibition.

In 1979, for the 125th anniversary of The Age, a facsimile edition was produced on brown or discoloured paper to give an antique effect. It was distributed with The Age. An accompanying article explains: today 'The Age' is 125 years old, and to mark the anniversary this latest issue also contains our first issue. As part of today's paper we carry an eight-page facsimile of 'The Age' that was published on Melbourne on October 17, 1854. The facsimile is reproduced from a copy that belonged to John Pascoe Fawkner. It bears his signature on the front page, and was lent by the State Library for this occasion.
