Photograph of Bourke Street in Melbourne taken in May 1901 as the city was being dressed for the visit of the Duke & Duchess of Cornwall and York for the opening of the first federal parliament of Australia, which took place in the (Royal) Exhibition Building on 9 May. For the 10 days of the royal couple's visit, city streets were bedecked with bunting and arches. The photographer was M J Daniel.
Description of Content
The photograph is taken looking west down Bourke St from Spring St. The street is heavily decorated with bunting, flags and ribbons. Flag poles line both sides of the street. A variety of horse drawn vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians are moving along the street. The photograph provides some clear views of costume in 1901. The Post Office tower is visible in the background as is the Arch erected across Bourke St.
