Summary
Bronze medal certificate dated 30 September 1870, awarded by the Agricultural Society of New South Wales to Thomas Gaunt, Melbourne, for his display of a turret clock at the Metropolitan Intercolonial Exhibition. The clock was made for St Augustine's Catholic Church in Bourke Street, Melbourne.
Physical Description
Cream certificate with black, red & gold print in a heavy cream cardboard frame. Each corner is decorated with filigree in gold & black. On the left of the certificate is the obverse of the commemorative medallion struck for the Exhibition, which shows a female figure possibly representing Learning, holding a torch aloft in her right hand and a laurel wreath in her left. She is standing on a platform with four young children at her feet. To her right, one of the children is holding a crook and tending sheep, the other is holding a branch. To her left, one child has a garland of fruit & leaves and the other is gathering wheat sheaves. These are representative of important aspects of NSW economy. The platform has 3 images on its base, representing the arts, agriculture and industry. On the right of the certificate, the reverse of the medallion has a border of laurel leaves and the inscription PRACTICE WITH SCIENCE. The Bronze Medal certificate was awarded to Thomas Gaunt for a Turret Clock. It is dated Sydney, September 30 1870 and is signed by the Secretary.
