Physical Description

Certificate mounted in a heavy cream cardboard frame. Central figure of a woman in classical style robes, holding a torch aloft in her right hand and a laurel wreath in her left. She possibly represents Learning. She is standing on a platform with four young children at her feet. To her right, one child is holding a crook and tending to sheep while the other child is holding a branch. To her left, one child has a garland of fruit and leaves and the other is gathering wheat sheaves. These were important aspects of the NSW economy at the time. The platform has three images on its base, representing the arts, agriculture and industry. There is a decorative border, of fine lines. This bronze medal certificate was awarded to Thomas Gaunt for a barometer at the Metropolitan Intercolonial Exhibition, Sydney, 1873.
