Physical Description
Buff coloured certificate, black, gold & silver text, in a heavy cream cardboard frame. Elaborate border, gold, with a pattern similar to fleur de lis. At the top a coat of arms, with the shield flanked by a lion on the left and a unicorn on the right. British, American & Colonial flags hand on either side. To the left side of the certificate, in silver, the obverse of the commemorative medallion struck for the occasion. It shows 2 men, representing America and the British Empire standing either side of a Globe. This is in a circular border & decorated with ferns & other flora. To the right, the reverse of the medallion also in silver. This has a circle of leaves around the edge & a Latin inscription. Certificate awarded to Thomas Gaunt for excellence in improved astronomical telescope stands & compound microscope stand, Educational microscope & small eight day compensation lever timepiece. Dated Melbourne, November 1875 and signed G C Levey, Secretary.
