Summary
Silk Italian Flag, used in Melbourne, Victoria, pre 1945. Items such as this flag represent the continuing sense of community and national identity felt by migrant groups in their new host countries. This type of flag was the Bandiera di Stato (State's Flag) of the Kingdom of Italy from 1861-1946. The current Italian national flag, just a plain tricolour, has been in use since June 1946 and was formally adopted as the Italian National flag on 1 January 1948.
Physical Description
Italian Flag. Rectangular red, white and green silk panels stitched together. A hand embroidered golden crown, with ten jewels, surmounts a white cross on a red shield with a blue boarder in the central white panel. There are four loops attached to the green panel, which allow the flag to be raised.
