Summary

Bound volume of the 'Illustrated London News', published between January and June 1851. At the front of the text is an index to engravings and articles within, including those referring to Australian exhibits at the 'Great Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations' (Great Exhibition), 1 May to 15 October 1851. Six million people made their way to the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London, to view the 100,000 exhibits on show. The exhibition made a substantial profit of 186,000 GBP and spawned a movement that captured the imagination of governments, manufacturers and the public across the world. In the following eight decades, international exhibitions were held every few years, including three in Australia: the Sydney International Exhibition 1879, the Melbourne International Exhibition 1880 and the Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition 1888.
