Wall Piece Jute & Branches by Naomi Ota, 1995. Naomi Ota is a Japanese craft artist who is now a permanent resident in Australia. She draws inspiration for her work from the natural environment, working with materials such as branches, leaves, fur, wool and silk. She has tertiary qualifications in the visual arts specialising in fibre work and has exhibited in both solo and group exhibitions in Kyoto and Melbourne.
Physical Description
This craft work is a complex construction of twigs bound to other twigs to form a frame through which dyed fibre forms undulate. The fibre is dyed purple, cream, black, maroon and ochre, and the entire construction forms a vague triangular shape to be hung against a wall. The piece is an attempt to express spacial ideas formulated through research in Aboriginal, Indonesian and Japanese cultures.
