Summary
Circular saw, manufactured by E.G. Lacey, Pty. Ltd., Collingwood, circa 1926-1930. It was taken from Area D3 in Adolph Bruhn & Son's Wood Turners Shop, 283 Coventry Street, South Melbourne. The business was established by Adolph Bruhn circa 1893 in Little Collins Street, Melbourne. Upon his death in 1919 it was then operated by Adolph's son Sophus Christopher Bruhn. Upon Sophus's death in 1959 his son Sophus Walter Bruhn took over the business. In 1970 Sophus reduced the scale of the business and relocated to South Melbourne. The business closed upon Sophus's death in January 1990.
Adolph Bruhn migrated to Australia from Germany in 1884, at the age of 29. He arrived in Adelaide where he lived for 10 months before moving to Victoria, where he settled, established his business, married and had five children.
Physical Description
Base is hollow, metal, square column with outward curving lips bolted to floor. Inserted through side of column is a circular metal shaft attached to five-spoked turning wheel with handle at left and protruding out. Bolted horizontally across top of column is solid metal table. A gutter runs widthways along table to back. Parallel to gutter, 1/3 of a blade protrudes from table, guide runs to front. Turning bar attached to guide, metal arm at side of table. There is a metal thread leading to smooth metal head, with hole through width of head. Inserted through hole is a moveable smooth metal bar with enlarged circular discs at either end.
