12-gallon gas-powered laundry copper, 'Footscray' model, made by Metters, an Australian manufacturer. Black enamelled body with white specks. The copper has a lid, cast iron legs and tap.
It was acquired by the State Electricial Commission of Victoria and stored by the SEC Public Relations Branch as display material.
Advertisements for Metters 'gas washing coppers' were placed in Australian newspapers from around 1920 (25 August 1920, p.1, The Telegraph (Brisbane)).
Physical Description
Metters 12 gallon copper. Black enamelled body with white specks and blue top. Three cast iron legs and tap protruding in front from base. Just above tap is hole where pilot flame is lit with metal cover inscribed "LIGHT HERE". Top is circular with one straight edge at rear & is enamelled mid- blue with white specks. Rear centre has hole to attach hose or tap. Circular lid rising to convex shape. Enamelled blue with green specks & has bakelite knob.

The source of date information is unknown. Metters was making gas coppers from at least 1920. 'Footscray' might be a model name rather than a place of manufacture. -
