Summary
Alternative Name(s): Advertising Fan - Buckleys
Paper fan advertising Buckley's Department Store in Melbourne. It features an image of a woman in a slim flapper-style dress with Chinese lanterns. The fan was made circa 1920-1930 and was used in Kyneton, Victoria, Australia. Its date is based on the style of the object.
Buckley & Nunn was then a major Melbourne department store with several branches in suburban shopping centres as well as a flagship multi-building city store.
Physical Description
Small paper fan with nine wooden ribs. On obverse is a vividly-coloured drawing in shades of blue, white, black and orange of a woman in a slim flapper-style dress in a garden setting against a background of three large Chinese lanterns. On reverse is a sepia photograph of the store Buckley's in Bourke Street, Melbourne, with crowds of people and several cars outside. The wooden ribs are held at the base by a metal pin, and there are traces of the original red tassle.
