Physical Description
Circular brooch of 15 carat gold, set with half pearls. The motif is a bird (swallow carrying a branch with 3 leaves in its beak, backed by a circular frame. Set originally with 18 tiny half pearls (including 3 on each leaf); pearl on bird's tail is missing. A hinged pin at the back (metal unknown) secures brooch and a fine link chain (6cm long) with a small safety pin at end froms a safety clasp. Hallmarks stamped on underside of bird (see Accession Sheet for drawings). The brooch belonged to donor;s wife and/or other family members (She died 1983) Brooch was valued by Kozminsky Gallery Pty Ltd on 9.8.88 at $150.00. The valuer suggested that it may have been made by Wendt, circa 1910.It was also valued by Leonard Joel (Auctioneers and Valuers) on 5.7.88 at $150.00.
