Summary

Silver Egg Cup made circa 1905. It was presented to Ernest Cecil Huber in 1905 and was probably a christening gift from his grandparents.

Ernest Cecil Huber was born on 18 October 1904 in Lambeth, London. He worked as a mid shipman and jumped ship at Melbourne in 1927, where he settled and established a life. He married in 1931, and he and his wife had five children. He was a Sargent Major with the Australian Armed Forces during World War II, serving in the Middle East from 1939 to 1945. Upon his return home from the war he worked for the railways. He died on 5 April 1983 in Melbourne.

The cup was donated "in memory of our father Ernest Cecil Huber".

Physical Description

Silver egg cup, rounded conical cup mounted on smaller conical stem. The stem flares out to become a shallow concave dish. There is a ring mounted at one side of the dish. On the front of the cup, the ring is on the left, there is a shield of gold metal with red and white enamel. The borders are of gold metal, at the centre raised in gold metal there are three passant lions one above the other, they are surrounded with red enamel. At the top there is the word JERSEY in raised gold letters surrounded with white enamel. Stamped into the base there are the letters EPNS, below this there is a line of five symbols. Two raised areas of what appears to be silver solder, just below the rim to the right of the shield.
