Summary

Classic Australian goldfield's miner's brooch, made circa 1890, possibly in Victoria. It consists of a pointed shovel with a small nugget attached, a pick with nugget attached to one end, a length of rope twisted along the shovel shaft and around a larger nugget to the centre of the shovel shaft, tying the shovel and pick together, finishing with a bucket attached to one end of the rope.

Unfortunately, as with many items of colonial jewellery, the brooch carries no maker's mark, only a gold standard mark. However, the brooch presented the gold miner with an item to display the success of his work in the field, to be worn by either gender.
