Summary
Hardstone and 9 carat gold cameo brooch made by Harry Young, Melbourne, Victoria, circa 1885.
While cameos are often carved from shell, other materials such as agate, coral, gemstones, and hardstones like onyx, jasper, and jade are also commonly used. Agate, in particular, lends itself well to intricate carving, with its multicoloured bands and varying tones effectively enhancing delicate relief work.
Physical Description
Gold bar brooch with centrally placed, rectangular cameo. Made of dark brown hardstone the cameo features a bearded male bust facing left with a lighter brown background.
