Summary
Gold fob on a 15ct gold chain of intricate design and of Australian manufacture, circa 1900, probably made from Victorian gold. The gob fob, made by Hardy Bros., Melbourne, was presented to L. Alexander on the opening of the Church Street Bridge, Richmond on 6 July 1924.
The fob is testament to the importance of fobs to men during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. They were a statement of not only decoration but also social, political and sporting recognition. This fob was presented to Mr Alexander as a souvenir of his attendance at the opening. Still in use today, the bridge spans the Yarra River, connecting Chapel Street, South Yarra to Bridge Road, Richmond.
