Summary
Mother of pearl brooch made by G.H. Palfrey, Melbourne, circa 1900.
This brooch illustrates the versatility of some of Victoria's jewellers and the fashion of using natural materials, which was a consequence of the interest in the writings of Charles Darwin. For Australian jewellers the use of natural products was also driven by the lack of precious stones available in Australia.
Physical Description
Oval mother of pearl brooch in thin gold setting.
