Summary
Denis Bros 15 carat gold, opal & diamond bracelet, circa 1890.
Sylla Denis migrated to Australia, from France, in 1853. He unsuccessfully sought wealth on the Ballarat goldfields before establishing a jewellery business in Swanston Street, Melbourne, in the late 1850s. His brother, Victor, immigrated and joined his brother in the jewellery business in 1866.
The Denis Brothers crafted quality pieces of jewellery. Three bangles by them, two containing diamonds, are shown on p.72 of "Cavill Cocks and Grace".
This bracelet has, as its centrepiece, a crystal opal, Australia's national stone, supported by rose cut diamonds. It is housed in its original box.
Physical Description
Gold bracelet with filigree design on front and central oval crystal opal. Either side of the opal and set within the gold band are four rose cut diamonds. Four thin delicate bands that curve outwards from either side of the band, framing the opal, have a single diamond each at their base.
