Summary
Fine colonial gold locket with diamonds by Edward Schafer of Melbourne, Victoria, circa 1870.
This is a good example of an Australian colonial gold memorial locket, it not only features fine quality machine engraving but also incorporates a row of old mine cut diamonds running down the centre. Crafted from 15ct gold, the locket bears an "emu" mark. Although this mark was used by both Edward Schafer and Edwards and Kaul, the quality of the work and the inclusion of very rarely used diamonds makes it likely that this piece is by Edward Schafer.
The bail carries the mark of "GAUNT" who was likely the purveyor of the locket.
Physical Description
Gold oval locket featuring a vertical row of diamonds framed by machine engraved ornate vertical linework.
